Teenager runs his own petting farm with 300 animals – and knows them all by name
A young animal enthusiast, William Evans, embarked on a journey that began as a simple hobby but blossomed into something truly extraordinary. Alongside his sister Eleanor, they initially showcased their rabbits, chickens, and guinea pigs at local and county exhibitions, where they achieved remarkable success. When the pandemic disrupted daily life, William’s family made a pivotal decision. His mother, Helen, temporarily unemployed, collaborated with William to purchase 500 chickens, planning to sell their eggs within the Swansea and Gower communities – a venture that thrived, requiring them to operate tirelessly five days a week to meet demand.
As restrictions eased in the summer of 2020, the family unveiled their farm, established on the land purchased by William’s father, Richard, at Gowerton Road, Three Crosses, Swansea. The public was invited to interact with the chickens, gaining insight into their egg production process. The positive reception and enthusiasm from visitors sparked inspiration in young William. At the age of 14, William seized the opportunity and transformed the land into ‘Will’s Petting Farm,’ inviting visitors to engage with a diverse array of animals, from sheep, chickens, and goats to horses, llamas, alpacas, rabbits, and pigs.
The farm, primarily operational between May and September, offers enriching experiences for various groups, including council events, birthday celebrations, and baby/toddler gatherings. Boasting 300 animals, including rare species such as black Racka sheep from Hungary and Ouessant sheep, the farm has garnered popularity, attracting hundreds of visitors monthly, spanning different age groups from infants to the elderly.
William, at 18, has assembled a multi-generational team of nine staff members and impressively remembers all 300 animals by name. Entry to the petting farm costs a mere £2.50, with an additional £1.50 for a feed pot, making it one of the most affordable tourist attractions in Wales. Accommodating educational tours, the farm serves as a hub for learning about animal species, their produce sources, and fostering mental well-being through interactions with nature.
William’s dedication to his passion extends beyond managing the farm; amidst pursuing his studies, maintaining a social life, and now commencing a business management course at Swansea University. Reflecting on his journey, William emphasizes the fulfillment derived from bridging a hobby with a successful enterprise, encouraging individuals to pursue ventures aligned with their passions.
The farm not only offers a memorable experience for visitors but also serves as a safe haven for various animals in need. Welcoming discarded pets, the farm provides a nurturing environment for guinea pigs, rabbits, and other animals facing neglect due to the rising cost of pet care. Through his farm, William aims to educate and inspire visitors, fostering a deeper appreciation for animals and nature.
