Swansea’s iconic Palace Theatre reopens after painstaking restoration

The historic Palace Theatre in Swansea has finally reopened its doors to the public after undergoing a meticulous restoration process. The iconic building, located on the corner of High Street and Prince of Wales Road, has been transformed into a vibrant business hub and café following an investment of over £10 million. The Swansea Council took over the ownership of the theatre and initiated a comprehensive restoration project that has revitalised both the exterior and interior of the building.

The exterior of the Palace Theatre has been meticulously restored to its original 1888 glory, while the interior now spans six floors, including a basement level. The revamped theatre is now operated by Tramshed Tech, a tech hub company, offering flexible workspaces, business growth programs, and skills training for the creative, digital, and technology sectors. The opening of the Palace Theatre was marked by an informal event attended by distinguished guests, including First Minister Eluned Morgan and cabinet colleague Jayne Bryant.

One of the notable visitors to the newly restored venue was former DJ and promoter, Matt Hutchinson, who fondly recalled his experiences of performing at the theatre. He highlighted the historical significance of the building, expressing his enthusiasm for its transformation into a bustling hub of innovation. The restoration project has preserved many original features of the theatre, including the decorative iron balcony, original Ebbw Vale brickwork, and unique floor tiles.

The Palace Theatre has a rich history, having served various purposes over the years, from a music hall to a nightclub. The newly refurbished venue has garnered praise from the local community, with many lauding its potential to become a thriving centre for creativity and entrepreneurship. The restoration of the Palace Theatre represents a significant milestone in the preservation of Swansea’s cultural heritage and marks a new chapter in the building’s legacy.

The transformation of the Palace Theatre was made possible through the collaborative efforts of construction firm R&M Williams, GWP Architecture, Hydrock (now Stantec), TC Consult, and dedicated council officers. The project received substantial funding from the Welsh Government, underscoring the importance of preserving historical landmarks for future generations to enjoy. The reopening of the Palace Theatre is expected to contribute to the regeneration of Swansea’s High Street and create opportunities for small businesses to thrive in the local community.
