Swansea City council confirm when former Debenhams building will reopen

Swansea City Council has confirmed that plans are in place for the reopening of the former Debenhams building in the city. The building, located at the Quadrant Shopping Centre, closed its doors in 2021 after the Debenhams chain went into administration. Since then, the council acquired the building in April 2023 and has been working on securing new tenants.

At a recent council scrutiny meeting, it was revealed that two major retailers and a leisure operator are being considered to occupy the space. Council leader Rob Stewart indicated that the building may not fully reopen until October 2026, providing a “worst-case scenario” timeline for the project. Discussions have been ongoing with potential occupants, and plans are being developed to adapt the four-storey building to accommodate multiple tenants.

Phil Holmes, the council’s head of planning and city regeneration, shared that progress is being made, and there is optimism about finalizing agreements soon. Councillor Peter Black expressed surprise at the timeline proposed, hoping for a swifter occupation of the building. Council leader Stewart reassured that efforts are being made to expedite the process, aiming for an earlier opening than the projected date.

The Swansea Labour leader also hinted at the excitement surrounding the potential tenants but refrained from disclosing any names until permission is granted. The building itself is undergoing assessments, including potential asbestos concerns, with assurances that necessary precautions are being taken. Plans for a refresh of the building’s exterior have also been outlined.

Additionally, the council provided updates on various other projects in the city. These include the opening of The Kingsway office building by the end of the year, ongoing work on a multi-storey car park, proposals for residential developments, and the restoration of historical sites. These initiatives aim to revitalise the city centre, attract footfall, and create opportunities for economic growth.

The council remains committed to driving forward these projects and ensuring that Swansea continues to evolve and thrive. Stay tuned for further updates as these developments progress.
