Storm Lilian hits Wales with 80mph winds with Met Office warning in place : live updates

Storm Lilian has hit Wales with winds reaching up to 80mph, prompting the Met Office to issue warnings across the region. As the storm sweeps through, there have been reports of a tree falling on a railway line in Ceredigion, causing delays in train services between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth. Additionally, Natural Resources Wales has issued 14 flood alerts, particularly focused on coastal areas in the west and south west of Wales.

The storm, named Storm Lilian by the Met Office, is also expected to bring heavy rain along with the strong winds. Moving northeast, Lilian is forecasted to affect northern England and Wales, as well as parts of southern Scotland. The warnings highlight potential disruptions in travel, the risk of power cuts, and dangerous conditions near coastal areas. A yellow warning for wind is in place for parts of Wales from 5am to 11am to alert residents and travellers to the severe weather conditions.

Met Office chief meteorologist Jason Kelly emphasised the potential for damaging gusts during Friday morning, with winds ranging from 50-60mph and the possibility of gusts exceeding 75mph in certain areas. The associated rainfall from Lilian has also prompted a warning for parts of Scotland, with up to 50mm of rain expected over high ground and 20-30mm across other areas. This heavy rain falling on saturated ground increases the risk of surface water flooding.

In response to the storm, authorities have taken precautions, with the closure of the M48 Severn Bridge in both directions due to high winds. Diversion routes have been put in place to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers. As Storm Lilian continues to impact Wales, residents are urged to stay updated on the latest developments and to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during the severe weather conditions.
