A rare red weather warning has been issued for Storm Eowyn, expected to bring high winds and heavy rain to the UK. The potential impact of the storm has triggered school closures and travel warnings. The arrival of winter storms often results in significant damage to gardens across the country. Research conducted by Ronseal revealed that nearly half of Brits overlook storing their garden furniture properly, leading to damage after storms or heavy rainfall. Fences were reported as the most vulnerable part of the garden, with over 40% of respondents mentioning damage to them.
With predictions of rainy spells and showers in the UK, Ronseal’s DIY expert, Jimmy Englezos, has shared valuable insights on how to safeguard garden furniture, fences, and decking from adverse weather conditions. Englezos emphasized the importance of storing garden furniture before extreme weather hits to prevent damage. He highlighted specific concerns for different types of materials; for instance, metal furniture is prone to rust and corrosion, while wooden furniture is susceptible to discolouration, mould growth, and warping when exposed to rain.
To protect gardens from extreme weather, Englezos offered five top tips. Firstly, securing flight risk items like wheely bins and washing lines or moving larger items to sheltered areas can prevent damage. Secondly, wooden furniture should be cleaned with soapy water, dried thoroughly, and coated with a protective oil. Additionally, packing away garden furniture, particularly lightweight items that can become projectiles in high winds, is crucial for preventing accidents or damage. Repairing broken fences before severe weather hits and applying a weather-repellent sealant or stain to decking were also recommended to fortify garden structures.
As Storm Eowyn approaches, homeowners are advised to implement these protective measures to safeguard their gardens. Preparing for extreme weather events can reduce the risk of damage and ensure that outdoor spaces remain safe and enjoyable. Englezos’ practical advice serves as a timely reminder for individuals to take proactive steps in securing their garden furniture and structures to withstand the challenges posed by winter storms. By following these guidelines, Brits can minimise the impact of severe weather on their outdoor areas and maintain the longevity of their garden amenities.
