Community Rallies to Commemorate Six-Year-Old Tragically Killed by Mother in a Heartbreaking Turn of Events in Wales
The local community of a small area in Swansea has been left reeling after the tragic death of six-year-old Alexander Zurawksi, whose body was discovered at a property in Cwm Du Close in the Gendros area of Swansea on August 29 last year. Shock turned to disbelief as it came to light that Alexander’s own mother, Karolina Zurawska, 41, was accused of his murder. Recently, on Monday, March 3, 2025, Karolina Zurawska pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her son due to diminished responsibility, citing a psychotic illness of paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the incident. She is awaiting sentencing on April 25. This news has sent shockwaves through the community, and many have now come together to ensure that Alexander is remembered fondly.
In the wake of this tragedy, members of the community have united to raise funds to create a sensory garden at Whitestone Primary School in Swansea, where Alexander was a student. The initiative was spearheaded by Bruno Santos, father of one of Alexander’s classmates, Lyla. Reflecting on the heartbreak that gripped the community, Bruno shared, “The parents and the staff, everyone was really shocked with the thing. We just wanted to do something and we were talking with the school about what we could possibly do in memory of Alexander.” Bruno’s employer, Llyod and White, a part of the Benefact group, have pledged to match donations made towards the project.
While Bruno never had the chance to meet Alexander or his family, he hopes that the sensory garden will serve as a lasting tribute to the young boy’s memory. He expressed, “I started this fundraising campaign to support the special facility. I hope this initiative not only honours his memory but also brings some comfort to the children and staff at the facility, giving them a peaceful space to reflect and heal.” The community expects that the garden will not only serve as a memorial but also benefit current and future students, providing a place for solace and reflection.
Headteacher Bethan Peterson of Whitestone Primary School conveyed, “Alexander was an extremely loved and popular boy amongst his peers, staff and with all who knew him. He is sadly missed by us all. We are working to create a sensory garden in his memory, that will provide a calming and reflective area that further promotes the well-being of our learners.” Additionally, an additional fundraiser has been initiated by Veronica Needham to install a memorial bench for Alexander at the seafront, a place he adored for its sand and seashells. The community has come together to raise funds for these initiatives, aiming to create lasting tributes to Alexander’s memory.
