Slash cancer risk by checking this one thing on your phone every day, doctor says

A doctor in the UK is urging people to take a simple step each day to reduce their risk of skin cancer, which claims the lives of over 3,000 individuals annually in the country. Dr. Karan Rajan, a surgeon with the NHS also known as Dr. Raj, shared a crucial tip on social media platform TikTok to help prevent skin cancer. He recommends checking the ultraviolet (UV) index on your phone daily to determine if you should apply sunscreen. Weather apps provide the UV index for the day, with specific levels indicating the need for extra caution to safeguard skin health.

Dr. Raj highlighted the importance of sunscreen in protecting against cancer and reducing the signs of ageing, emphasising the two-fold benefit. For individuals with fair skin, applying sunscreen daily is essential, particularly if the UV index reaches three or higher. On the other hand, those with darker skin may only need to use sunscreen when the index is elevated, such as above seven or eight during prolonged sun exposure.

The UV index, which increases from zero upwards, indicates the potential for harm to the skin and eyes, with higher values posing a greater risk. The World Health Organisation advises protective measures based on the UV index levels, such as seeking shade and wearing sunscreen and protective clothing. Cancer Research UK highlights common skin cancer symptoms, urging individuals to seek medical advice if any concerning changes are noted on their skin.

By practising sun protection measures aligned with the UV index, individuals can mitigate the risk of skin cancer and promote skin health. Daily awareness of the UV index and proactive sunscreen application based on personal skin type and sun exposure can contribute significantly to reducing the incidence of skin cancer.
