Noisy Fridge at Convenience Store Lands Owner with Fine
A convenience store in Cardiff has been fined more than £2,000 due to a noisy fridge that caused a disturbance to local residents. The Fisher Convenience Store, a Spar located on Michaelston Road in Ely, faced consequences in court for not addressing the issue despite a Noise Abatement Notice being served on the property back on May 31, 2023. The owner was handed a fine of £1,081 along with costs of £700 and a surcharge of £432 for the excessive noise emitting from the fridge’s condenser unit at the store.
Following a complaint from a member of the public, who found the fridge’s noise to be disruptive to nearby residents, officers from the Cardiff Council Shared Regulatory Services visited the store owner’s premises on February 7 and May 29 of 2024 to witness the extent of the noise pollution. The noise level was determined to constitute a statutory noise nuisance, prompting the council to take action.
Councillor Norma Mackie, responsible for shared regulatory services in Cardiff, highlighted the council’s efforts to address noise complaints cooperatively with businesses and the public before resorting to legal action.
