Snooker fans across the globe have their eyes fixed on the Crucible Theatre, where Shaun Murphy—affectionately known as ‘The Magician’—is currently vying for top honours against world number one, Judd Trump, in the second round of the World Snooker Championship. Murphy arrives at this tournament riding high after his victory in the Masters earlier this year, yet he faces an uphill battle, trailing Trump 5-3 going into Sunday’s evening session.

While most followers will remember Murphy’s spectacular breakthrough as a qualifier claiming the World Championship title in 2005, his journey both on and off the table has been defined by resilience and remarkable comebacks. In joining the select company of Alex Higgins and Terry Griffiths, Murphy not only won the title but also became the third qualifier in history to reach the final. Since then, he’s come close to recapturing that crown three times, and with 12 ranking tournament titles and an estimated net worth of about £5 million, there’s little doubt he’d relish another world title—and the accompanying £500,000 prize.

However, Murphy’s career has not been immune to challenges away from the baize. In May 2023, he experienced the heartbreak of a second marriage breakdown, amicably separating from his wife Elaine. The pair had been married since 2016, sharing two children—Harry and Molly—and even relocated to Dublin in a bid to give their relationship a fresh start. Murphy later reflected candidly on the split, explaining, “We tried to reconcile and it will be nice to look back in years to come and know we tried absolutely everything to make our marriage work. It’s amicable. We move on as friends and our whole lives now become about raising our children and protecting them, because life’s not easy.”

This was not Murphy’s first experience with marital strife. Previously, he had been married to Clare, whom he wedded in 2005 after moving to Rotherham to be with her. That relationship came under intense scrutiny three years later, when a sensational tabloid report sent shockwaves through the snooker fraternity. The press linked Murphy to an “unsavoury” escort scandal on the very eve of his second World Championship final against John Higgins. His then-manager quickly released a statement clarifying that although Murphy had spent time with the woman, he had not been unfaithful.

Reflecting later on the controversy, Murphy described being caught off guard by the impact of fame after his initial triumph, particularly as media attention also probed into his religious background. “Some unsavoury things were written about me which I didn’t know how to handle,” Murphy told The Guardian, adding layers to the emotional and mental pressures faced by high-profile sports figures.

Murphy later clarified the circumstances that led to the public scandal. He explained that the woman in question was someone he had dated in his youth and, following his split from Clare in 2008, she reconnected with him through social media. According to Murphy, she misrepresented her occupation until it was revealed in the press, leading to unwanted headlines that left him “unnerved” and struggling with the sudden glare of notoriety.

Amidst these personal upheavals, Murphy has been open about the significant impact they’ve had on his mental health. The turning point came in 2022, when he made the life-changing decision to undergo gastric sleeve surgery. At his heaviest, Murphy weighed over 20 stone and was, by his own admission, suffering from severe issues with self-esteem, isolation, and depression. “[The operation] has changed my life from top to bottom,” he shared with Eurosport, emphasising that, had he sought a diagnosis, he would likely have been signed off for depression.

He continued: “My self-esteem was through the floor and I did not want to go out and play. I did not want to leave the house and that spiralled into feeling miserable and eating more. I don’t think it is too extreme to say it was life-saving for me.”

As Murphy competes at the highest levels once again, his journey serves as a testament to perseverance and the capacity for personal reinvention. With the snooker world watching, he now faces dual challenges—maintaining his form on the green baize and continuing his journey towards greater personal wellbeing. Regardless of the outcome at the Crucible, Murphy’s candidness about his struggles offers inspiration beyond sporting achievement and highlights the human stories behind the headlines.
