Sexual assault by ex-police officer left a young girl planning to end her own life
A former police officer’s sexual assault on a young girl had such a devastating impact that she felt compelled to plan ending her own life. John Stringer, 43, a former officer with Gwent Police, perpetrated the abuse, compelling his victim to touch herself after exposing her to a pornographic image. Initially, he showed the girl a pornographic image and instructed her to mimic the actions of the woman in the image, despite her reluctance. The abuse escalated as Stringer forced the victim to touch herself while he listened. He later engaged in direct sexual assaults on the victim. The victim showed immense courage by disclosing the abuse to school friends and teachers, ultimately leading to Stringer’s arrest.
At the sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, it was revealed that Stringer had been convicted of two counts of sexual assault by touching, two counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and one count of causing a child to watch a sexual act following a trial in September. The court heard that Stringer had a significant history of viewing pornography, with over 4,000 searches related to pornography found on his phone. The victim’s mother, in a statement read to the court, highlighted the profound impact the abuse had on her daughter, noting how she resorted to self-harm to cope with the trauma.
The mother expressed her daughter’s struggles with blaming herself for the abuse and the emotional turmoil she endured, including contemplating ending her own life. Stringer displayed a lack of remorse and denial throughout the proceedings, leading to a 10-year prison sentence. He was also subjected to various orders and requirements aimed at safeguarding the public from further harm. The victim’s family emphasised the importance of justice being served and the ongoing process of healing and recovery.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the long-lasting effects of sexual abuse and the importance of speaking out against such heinous acts. It underscores the resilience of survivors and the critical role of support systems in facilitating healing and justice. Stringer’s actions have inflicted profound emotional and psychological scars on the victim, highlighting the need for robust measures to prevent and address such atrocities in society.
