A seagull was brutally attacked in Swansea city centre and had to be put down due to the severity of its injuries. The incident, which occurred near Castle Square at the top of Oxford Street on Saturday, August 24, at around 6 pm, was witnessed by onlookers. The RSPCA has launched an appeal for witnesses and information regarding the attack. The gull was reported to have been grabbed by its wing, thrown to the floor, and kicked, resulting in a broken wing. The RSPCA Inspector Keith Hogben expressed that the upsetting incident would have been distressing for anyone present.
Following the attack, the injured gull was confined to a box and taken for examination. Unfortunately, due to the extent of its injuries, the decision was made to euthanise the bird to prevent further suffering. The RSPCA has urged anyone with first-hand information about the incident to contact their appeals line at 0300 123 8018, quoting case number 01338330. Inspector Hogben also extended gratitude to those who assisted the gull and reached out to report the incident.
The RSPCA is seeking the public’s help in identifying a man and a woman who may have information relevant to the investigation. The charity released a photo of a man wearing a white top, jeans, and carrying a black strapped pink/orange bag, as well as a woman in a white t-shirt and jeans with dark hair. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the appeal line at 0300 123 8018. The RSPCA emphasised the importance of treating animals with respect, highlighting that gulls are intelligent creatures that form strong social bonds with each other.
In light of the incident, the RSPCA also reminded the public to visit their website if they encounter a sick or injured bird.
