‘Scared’ mum-of-two living in flats block littered with needles and rubbish

A mother-of-two in Llanelli, Sylwia Torunska, has expressed fear living in a council flat at Granby Close due to what she claims is anti-social behaviour and drug abuse on the estate. Torunska resides with her nine-year-old and 10-month-old daughters and dog in a two-bedroom first-floor flat. She described the experience of having to explain drugs to her elder daughter as “horrible,” highlighting concerns over drug needles and rubbish scattered on the grass outside the flats. Torunska indicated the need for a three-bedroom property and has shared photos of drug paraphernalia and rubbish with Carmarthenshire Council, seeking a housing transfer to no avail.

The resident noted a deterioration in the estate’s conditions over the past two years and has reached out to various entities, including local MP Dame Nia Griffith and the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales. Torunska, who works part-time as a hotel cleaner, plans to return to work after her maternity leave ends. Despite exploring private renting for a larger property, she found it financially unfeasible. The council responded to Torunska’s concerns, mentioning that although the area has experienced some issues, it does not warrant a higher housing banding. The council committed to addressing cleanliness and safety concerns at Granby Close.

Regarding police data, Torunska’s local ward reported multiple anti-social behaviour and drug-related incidents in contrast to the nearby ward she aspired to relocate to, challenging her claims of heightened crime in her current area. The council’s letter also highlighted Torunska’s behaviour during interactions, leading to restrictions on further reviews until the Ombudsman responds. Witness accounts from current and former Granby Close residents echo Torunska’s sentiments, with one ex-tenant describing challenging living conditions, indicating instances of drug activity, and expressing relief upon moving to a more suitable residence.

Incidents such as a recent court case involving a burglary at a Granby Close property and a past drug gang operation underscore broader safety concerns in the area. Despite the regulatory responses from the council, Torunska’s plea for relocation remains unfulfilled, prompting ongoing advocacy for improved living conditions for herself and her children. The challenges faced by residents like Torunska shed light on the complex issues affecting communities and the necessity for comprehensive support and solutions to ensure safe and dignified living environments for all.
