Rugby legend Gareth Thomas completes gruelling Pen y Fan challenge to help tackle HIV stigma

Rugby legend Gareth Thomas has completed a gruelling Pen y Fan challenge to support the Tackle HIV initiative, aimed at tackling stigma around HIV. Thomas conquered the South Wales peak ten times, equivalent to climbing Mount Everest, finishing the challenge in 17 hours and 20 minutes and concluding his 10th descent at 5 am on Friday. Tackle HIV is a campaign led by Thomas in collaboration with ViiV Healthcare and Terrence Higgins Trust, with a focus on raising awareness and dispelling misconceptions about HIV.

Thomas braved adverse conditions, including driving rain and strong headwinds, to demonstrate that living with HIV does not limit one’s physical capabilities. He emphasised the importance of showcasing that HIV does not restrict him physically or mentally and that it should not impact his life. Throughout most of the challenge, Thomas was supported by his dedicated Tackle HIV team, who have been with him on the Tackle HIV Bus Tour, spreading awareness across the country.

The campaign, which aims to alter public perceptions of HIV, includes a three-stop tour of universities, starting in Manchester and moving to Cardiff and Durham. Campaign advocate Becky Mitchell, who also lives with HIV, highlighted the significance of allyship and solidarity among those affected by the virus. ViiV Healthcare representative Helen McDowell stressed the importance of allies standing up for individuals impacted by HIV, contributing to the global fight against HIV stigma.

Thomas took to Instagram to share a video documenting the challenging conditions he faced during the Pen y Fan challenge, expressing gratitude for the support he received along the way. The physical feat serves as a powerful message that a virus should not restrict one’s capabilities, challenging existing stigma and misinformation about HIV. The Tackle HIV campaign continues to drive awareness and education to combat societal misconceptions surrounding HIV.
