Royal Mail issues stamps to mark 150th anniversary of Winston Churchill’s birth

Royal Mail has announced the launch of a set of eight stamps to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s birth. The stamps aim to honour Churchill’s remarkable life and enduring legacy, covering his roles as a soldier, statesman, and his pivotal leadership during the Second World War and beyond. Each stamp showcases iconic photographs of Churchill from significant moments in his life, accompanied by some of his most memorable quotes from articles, books, letters, and speeches. Churchill holds a special place in British history, having first appeared on a British stamp back in July 1965, making him the first contemporary individual to be featured in such a manner. Since then, Churchill has been featured on several stamp issues in the UK.

David Gold, the director of external affairs and policy at Royal Mail, expressed the significance of this stamp collection, stating, “One hundred and fifty years after his birth, this stamp issue celebrates the enduring legacy of a leader who shaped the course of history and left an indelible mark on the hearts of the British people.” In collaboration with Allen Packwood, the director of the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, Royal Mail has ensured that the stamp collection reflects the essence of Churchill’s life and contributions. Packwood remarked, “I think Winston Churchill would have been rather pleased to be the subject of these stamps, 150 years after his birth. His archive certainly contains no shortage of letters.”
