Rob Burrow’s widow reveals ‘fun and the laughter’ before he died

Rob Burrow’s widow, Lindsey Burrow, has opened up about the joyful moments of “fun and the laughter” that her late husband experienced before his passing. She revealed that Rob, a former rugby league star, found immense enjoyment in recording his final podcast series amidst his battle with motor neurone disease (MND). Lindsey hopes that people listening to the upcoming episodes of the show, titled “Rob Burrow Seven, Meets,” will remember Rob as the great person he was. The new episodes will be available on BBC Sounds and BBC Radio Leeds from September 26, which would have been Rob’s 42nd birthday.

Describing Rob’s attitude towards life, Lindsey shared, “He never felt sorry for himself. He just got on with life, and I think he’d be proud to have this series out.” Rob Burrow passed away in June at the age of 41, after bravely fighting MND for four and a half years. Despite his diagnosis coming shortly after retiring from his illustrious playing career, Rob remained determined to raise awareness about MND and support efforts to find a cure.

The podcast series features guests like retired Lioness Steph Houghton, former footballer Stephen Darby (who also has MND), and friend and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, among others. The conversations in the podcast highlight the depth of relationships and shared memories, such as playing pranks, reflecting the spirit of Rob’s life. The series aims to celebrate Rob’s legacy, with a special episode featuring sports stars like Wayne Rooney, Jonny Wilkinson, and Dame Kelly Holmes asking questions.

“Rob Burrow Seven, Meets” received recognition at the Audio and Radio Industry Awards (Arias), winning accolades for best new podcast, creative innovation, best new presenter, and impact. Rob initially launched his podcast “Seven” on BBC Radio Leeds last year, showcasing inspirational stories from sporting figures. Chris Burns, controller of audio commissioning, praised Rob’s bravery and humour in the face of his illness, making each episode of the podcast special.

Lindsey’s hope is that through these podcasts, listeners will not just hear Rob’s story but also feel the essence of the person he was. She believes that Rob’s infectious laughter and positivity will resonate with all those who tune in. The series serves as a tribute to Rob’s enduring spirit and the mark he left on everyone he encountered.
