Road closed as part of dual carriageway work set to re-open within weeks

A section of road in Rhondda Cynon Taf that had been closed for conversion into a dual carriageway is expected to re-open in the coming weeks, according to council leader Councillor Andrew Morgan. The road closure was part of a major scheme to dual a section of the A4119 carriageway, covering a 1.5km stretch between the south Wales Fire Service HQ roundabout and Coedely roundabout. The progress of the scheme was discussed during a council meeting, where Cllr Morgan provided an update on the works’ status.

During the full council session on Wednesday, January 15, Cllr Morgan explained that resurfacing works leading up to Christmas had faced delays due to adverse weather conditions. Originally scheduled to open in September of the previous year, the scheme was then expected to be completed before Christmas. However, finalisation of some off-carriageway work needs to be completed before the road can be opened to the public. The council leader assured that the remaining tasks are being addressed, and once the contractors confirm the completion of all necessary works, the road will be handed over for re-opening.

Cllr Morgan expressed optimism that the road section would be accessible to motorists in the near future, pending the contractors’ final assessments. He highlighted the anticipated benefits of the dual carriageway project, particularly in improving traffic flow and stimulating economic activity in the area. Additionally, plans for a Cynon Gateway road were discussed, with progress being made towards securing funding and addressing logistical considerations.
