Residents don’t want Domino’s to open in Welsh town after what happened with Greggs

Residents of Llantwit Major in Wales are expressing their concerns over a proposed Domino’s branch in the town following issues with a previous chain. The Vale of Glamorgan Council has approved plans for Domino’s to open a new restaurant in the county, despite opposition from residents and local businesses. The local planning committee approved the plans for the Domino’s branch to be located in the former Lloyds TSB bank on Boverton Road. While representatives from Domino’s highlighted the economic benefits and job opportunities the new branch would bring, residents and councillor Gwyn John raised concerns about increased litter and traffic congestion in the town.

Sarah-Jane Cecen, a local business owner in Boverton Road, pointed out the challenges the town already faces with maintaining cleanliness. She highlighted that the recent opening of a larger Greggs store had led to an increase in litter, which local businesses and residents had to address. With the heavy reliance on takeaway packaging by Domino’s, there are fears that the litter problem would worsen.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council is currently facing budget constraints, leading to reductions in services such as litter bins and street cleansing. Ms Cecen argued that the new Domino’s branch would create unfair competition for small businesses in the area and exacerbate existing parking issues. Cllr Gwyn John echoed these concerns, noting that Boverton Road already has a high concentration of takeaways, making it the “takeaway capital of the rural Vale.”

Geraint John, speaking on behalf of Domino’s, emphasised the economic benefits of the new branch, including job opportunities and the reuse of vacant commercial space. However, residents remain sceptical about the need for another pizza takeaway in the area, especially considering the current saturation of such establishments in Llantwit Major.

Council planners acknowledged the concerns raised by residents regarding litter and the high number of restaurants and takeaways in Boverton Road. While bins are available on the property frontages, there are worries about the proper disposal of waste. The council has been installing recycling bins in certain locations to encourage correct waste disposal practices.

Despite the approval of the Domino’s plans, residents and local businesses continue to express their reservations about the potential impact on the town. With ongoing discussions and negotiations between stakeholders, the issue of additional takeaways in Llantwit Major remains a contentious topic. As the community strives to balance economic development with environmental sustainability, the future of Domino’s in the town is still uncertain.
