Rentokil issues warning over ‘biting insect invasion’ during forecast hot weather

Rentokil, a leading pest control provider, has raised concerns about a potential surge in biting insects as the UK braces for soaring temperatures in the coming week. With forecasts predicting temperatures exceeding 20 degrees Celsius, the warm weather is expected to create a favourable environment for the proliferation of biting insects such as midges and mosquitoes. Rentokil noted a significant 60% increase in recorded activity of these insects between April and July 2024 compared to the same period last year, emphasising the need for heightened vigilance.

While it is uncommon for mosquitoes and biting insects in the UK to transmit diseases, their bites can be irritating and may trigger allergic reactions in some individuals. These insects thrive in wet and humid conditions and can rapidly develop from eggs to adults in as little as six to ten days. Typically found near calm water, mosquitoes are known to bite at dawn and dusk when they are most active. As temperatures rise, the breeding cycle of these insects accelerates, potentially leading to a rise in infestations across the country.

Paul Blackhurst, the technical academy head at Rentokil Pest Control, advises outdoor enthusiasts to be particularly cautious, especially during peak insect activity periods. Implementing preventive measures such as using insect repellents, installing screens on windows and doors, and eliminating sources of standing water can help reduce the risk of insect bites and infestations.

Rentokil recommends the following tips to prevent infestations and minimise the discomfort associated with mosquito and midge bites:

Use insect repellents: Apply repellent to exposed skin to deter bites.
Install screens: Ensure windows and doors are fitted with insect screens to prevent entry.
Eliminate standing water: Remove sources of standing water where insects can breed.
Maintain clean surroundings: Regularly clean compost caddies and dispose of food waste properly to avoid attracting insects.

In cases of persistent infestations, Rentokil advises seeking professional pest control services for comprehensive and effective treatment. By staying informed and taking proactive measures, individuals can safeguard themselves against potential insect invasions during the upcoming warm spell.
