CARDIFF – Cardiff Airport, which has faced significant challenges in recent times, received a welcome boost today with the news that one of the world’s largest airlines intends to return by the end of the year.
Qatar Airways revealed its plan to reinstate services at Cardiff Airport during a meeting in Doha with Alun Cairns, the Member of Parliament for Vale of Glamorgan. Mr. Cairns, who also serves as the chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Qatar, has maintained regular communication with the airline and Qatari authorities since the suspension of flights at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the meeting, Mr. Cairns discussed Qatar Airways’ future plans, including their return to Cardiff, with His Excellency Akbar Al Baker, CEO of the airline. Mr. Al Baker confirmed that the airline has concrete plans to resume operations at Cardiff Airport by the end of the year.

The resumption of the Cardiff to Doha route, which was disrupted in 2020 due to the pandemic and a dispute with Airbus resulting in aircraft shortages, is eagerly anticipated. Restoring Qatar Airways’ presence would provide a much-needed boost to the airport, which has suffered from the global health crisis.
Before the pandemic, a quarter of passengers traveling between Qatar and Wales were business travelers, highlighting the significance of this connection. Qatar Airways, known for its extensive network encompassing over 160 destinations worldwide, operates through its hub at Hamad International Airport in Doha, facilitating seamless travel and global connectivity.
Alun Cairns MP, who recently attended the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha, expressed his gratitude to Akbar Al Baker, stating, “I am thankful for his commitment to restart flights from Cardiff to Doha. This link to the Middle East and beyond is crucial. While the pandemic has undoubtedly impacted the airline industry, I remain hopeful that Qatar Airways’ return to Cardiff will deliver a substantial boost to the airport, which has faced challenging times. I firmly believe that resuming this service will unlock new opportunities in the Gulf region, offering our entrepreneurs direct access to one of the most vibrant economies in the Middle East.”
The anticipated return of Qatar Airways to Cardiff Airport holds great promise for revitalizing travel connections and stimulating economic growth in the region.
