Pub’s Stunning Marquee Along River Wye Faces Removal Order
The picturesque marquee outside the Boat Inn in Chepstow, overlooking the River Wye, has become a point of contention as Monmouthshire council has ordered its removal. The marquee was initially erected by landlady Amanda Cooper in August 2020 to support her business during the pandemic while adhering to social distancing regulations. However, complaints from locals have led to the council’s decision to take it down.
A planning dispute has arisen concerning the marquee’s size, with some residents arguing that it obstructs access to the Wye river bank path. Amanda Cooper has defended the installation, ensuring that a clear path remains available for public use, including access to the Chepstow boat club’s pontoon at the riverbank.
In February 2023, Cooper made a formal request to the council for permission to retain the marquee permanently outside her pub near the old town bridge. Despite withdrawing the initial application due to objections, a renewed proposal garnered support from 850 signatures. However, Monmouthshire council rejected the request in November last year, citing the marquee as unsuitable and obstructive to the pontoon area.
With 43 objections lodged against the proposal, Cooper has since appealed the council’s decision, leading to a pending decision by a Welsh planning inspector from PEDW. The ongoing planning battle reflects the importance of balancing business support measures with community interests and public access to shared spaces.
