A recent increase in infections, such as human metapneumovirus (HMPV), has raised concerns worldwide, with countries like China, India, and Malaysia all contending with outbreaks. Although different from Covid-19, the proliferation of HMPV has raised fears about its potential impact on the NHS’s capacity. Discovered in the Netherlands in 2001, HMPV belongs to the same viral group as the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Dr. Andrew Catchpole from the health research organisation hVIVO explained, “Whilst hMPV does mutate and change over time with new strains emerging, it is not a virus that we consider to have pandemic potential.” In England, instances of HMPV detections peaked in December, with roughly 4.5% of patients visiting their GP for respiratory issues testing positive for the virus. Children under five were the demographic most affected, with a positivity rate of 7.2%.
HMPV is transmitted through direct contact with an infected person or by touching a contaminated surface. In most cases, the virus causes a mild infection of the upper respiratory tract with symptoms similar to the flu, including a cough, fever, and a runny nose. The virus poses a greater risk to young children and individuals with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly and those with advanced cancer.
Dr. Conall Watson, a consultant epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency, stated, “HMPV is a common respiratory infection in winter, usually causing symptoms of a common cold.” He advised taking precautions such as regular hand washing and wearing face masks if symptoms of a respiratory illness arise, especially when going out.
As the NHS works to manage the surge in virus cases, the public’s cooperation in following guidelines and avoiding hospitals except when absolutely necessary is crucial to prevent overwhelming the healthcare system.
