Principality Stadium witnessed a spectacular turnaround as the Llanelli Wanderers secured a remarkable victory over Tondu in the Championship Cup final. The game, held at Principality Stadium, saw a thrilling comeback by the Welsh club, with the Wanderers sealing a stunning 35-32 win.
The Wanderers, who had previously clinched the Division One Cup title a year ago, found themselves trailing 32-7 as the game progressed towards the hour mark. However, two crucial tries by Elgan Morgan, who came off the bench, helped the Wanderers stage a dramatic comeback and secure the victory.
Despite Tondu having defeated the Wanderers earlier in the season, the latter were still considered the favourites heading into the final showdown. However, Tondu dominated the first half, leading 18-7 with players like Caine Woolerton, Jake Lewis, and Stu Young finding the try-line for Tondu.
In the second half, Tondu extended their lead with tries from Sam Matthews and an interception try by Steff Lewis, leaving the Wanderers trailing by a significant margin. However, a penalty try and quick tries by Elgan Morgan and Josh Weeds propelled the Wanderers back into contention, narrowing the gap to just four points.
With only minutes left in the game, Elgan Morgan’s second try secured the remarkable comeback for the Wanderers. Nick Gale’s conversion sealed the victory for the Wanderers in a thrilling finale at Principality Stadium.
Earlier in the day, Caernarfon emerged victorious in the Division One Cup final, edging out Bridgend Athletic in a tense encounter. The match saw Caernarfon clinch a narrow 30-29 win, with full-back Aled Jones playing a pivotal role and converting the winning try scored by Tom Devine.
Furthermore, Tom Devine and Iwan Roberts also contributed tries for Caernarfon, while captain Johnny Phillips scored twice for Bridgend Athletic. Despite a back-and-forth battle with the lead changing multiple times, Caernarfon held on to claim the title in a closely contested final.
The Championship Cup final at Principality Stadium showcased exceptional performances from both Llanelli Wanderers and Tondu, with the Wanderers’ impressive comeback underscoring their resilience and determination.
