Popular Goodsheds hub in Barry could soon be joined by new distillery and spa

A popular street food and business hub in Barry, known as Goodsheds, may soon see the addition of a new distillery and spa. The company responsible for Goodsheds, situated in Hood Road, Barry, has submitted an application for the new development to be constructed west of the existing site. Alongside the distillery and spa, the proposed complex is set to include a marquee and multi-purpose hall.

According to a design and access statement on behalf of the applicants, the aim of the proposal is to extend the thriving complex by creating a versatile space that will enhance the Goodsheds experience. Goodsheds initially opened its doors in August 2020, housing various businesses such as street food vendors, a café, bar, record shop, and health and beauty shop. The hub was developed by renovating a former railway goods building and adding nearby shipping containers.

Since its inception, Goodsheds has expanded to accommodate additional businesses, including offices and accommodation. The vision for the new development is to provide visitors with a comprehensive experience all in one place, catering to a diverse range of needs and interests. The proposed site, described as previously-developed land adjacent to a drive-through at the Goodsheds development, is poised to offer a unique destination for locals and tourists alike.

Shared Regulatory Services (SRS), a regulatory service operating in Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan, and Bridgend, has raised concerns regarding the new plans. It highlighted that the proposed site was part of the former docklands, raising the possibility of contamination due to past activities. SRS has requested a condition be attached to the application mandating a contamination assessment and any necessary remediation before commencing any work on the site.

Adjacent to the proposed development site, plans have recently been approved for a new Cardiff and Vale College campus. The Barry Waterfront Campus is part of a larger £100 million initiative aimed at replacing the Cardiff and Vale College Colcot Road site. Anticipated to cater for up to 1,000 full-time and part-time students, as well as nearly 80 staff, the state-of-the-art campus will feature active street frontages, including a hair and beauty salon and a student-run restaurant open to the public.

If approved, the new distillery, spa, marquee, and multi-purpose hall could soon become integral additions to the popular Goodsheds hub, further enriching the experience for visitors and contributing to the ongoing development of Barry.
