A busy Cardiff bridge has been closed off by police as searches of the River Taff appear to be underway. Emergency services have sealed off the Penarth Road bridge. Two rescue helicopters are circling a large area of Grangetown, and there are four boats in the river. A local resident describes the scene: “The helicopter is right above my head. It is moving very slowly across the river. There are fire engines, police vehicles and a large emergency service presence. The whole bridge is covered with emergency service crews.”
HM Coastguard confirmed they were called at 10:40 am to an incident in the River Taff. A rescue helicopter from St Athan, the RNLI Penarth lifeboat, and Coastguard Rescue Teams from Penarth and Barry Island are on site. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Wales Ambulance Service, and a police helicopter are also involved. A spokesman for the coastguard stated: “The incident is ongoing.”
An eyewitness in the area reports: “There are police and fire crews all over the bridge, and there are ambulances at the scene. The helicopter has been circling the Grangetown area for some time.” A fire rescue boat is on the River Taff with a ladder extended down to the water. All fire officers are out, and there are four boats on the river. The air ambulance is also present but has not landed.
The coastguard agency revealed they were called to assist South Wales Police with an incident at the River Taff in Cardiff. The ongoing operation involves multiple agencies, including the RNLI, fire and rescue services, ambulance service, and police.
