Police in Cardiff have provided an update on an incident that led to the evacuation of 60 people from a block of flats. The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded to a call at Bay Chambers on West Bute Street in Butetown on Thursday evening. Residents reported feeling unwell, with symptoms resembling carbon monoxide poisoning. Sixteen residents experienced symptoms such as nausea and headaches, with five individuals taken to the University Hospital of Wales for further tests. One person was kept in the hospital overnight for observation. Subsequently, all 60 residents were evacuated from the building.
Following investigations, carbon monoxide poisoning has been ruled out as the cause of the illness. Public Health Wales conducted air quality tests, which confirmed the absence of carbon monoxide. As a precautionary measure, Public Health Wales advised residents not to drink tap water and provided bottled water while investigations are ongoing. Residents have been allowed to return to their homes, with support from Cardiff council’s incident team and family housing support staff on-site during the incident.
Alternative accommodation and transport were arranged for residents, although these measures were not necessary. Public Health Wales is working with various agencies to determine the cause of the incident. Cardiff Bay has witnessed a series of concerning events, with ongoing investigations highlighting the importance of public health and safety in the community.
