Police in Wales have launched an investigation following reports of a man attacking and killing a swan near a river. The incident occurred near the River Teifi in the village of St Dogmaels, close to Cardigan. Authorities from Dyfed-Powys Police, who are accredited in wildlife matters, are looking into the incident and have issued a warning that individuals responsible for harming protected birds will face consequences.
Under the Countryside and Wildlife Act 1981 and the Animal Welfare Act 2006, intentionally harming or killing wild birds, including swans, is illegal. The RSPCA emphasises that all wild birds are safeguarded, and any deliberate harm towards them is punishable by law, with potential penalties including imprisonment and fines. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward.
While there are reports alleging that a man was seen attacking the swan, Dyfed-Powys Police has only confirmed the discovery of the dead swan and is appealing for further information from the public. A spokesperson for the police stated that the incident is under investigation, and no arrests have been made yet. The police reassured the community that they take wildlife offences seriously and will diligently pursue any leads in the case.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any information that could assist the investigation to Dyfed-Powys Police. Information can be provided online, via email, social media, or by calling the police’s contact number. Alternatively, individuals can reach out to Crimestoppers anonymously. The investigation is ongoing, with wildlife officers leading the effort to uncover the circumstances surrounding the swan’s death and bring the responsible parties to justice.
