Two new schools are set to be built in the Cornelly area following the submission of plans to the local council. The proposals, which include a new English medium school and a replacement Welsh medium school in North Cornelly, were lodged with Bridgend Council’s planning department in February 2025. The projects are part of long-term plans put forward by developers at The Urbanists, with the aim of enhancing educational facilities in the area.

The first development involves the construction of a new English-medium primary school in Marlas, located east of Heol Y Parc. This school is intended to replace Afon-y-Felin and Cornelly primary schools and will have a capacity of 420 primary places, 60 nursery places, and 15 additional learning needs places for children aged three to 11. The proposed facilities include a new school building, outdoor playing field, Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), access roads, parking spaces, and landscaping.

The plans for the English-medium school outline a design that prioritises accessibility and safety, with vehicular access from Heol-Y-Parc and designated parking areas. The school will offer a modern learning environment with a focus on both educational and recreational spaces for students of various age groups.

In addition to the English medium school, proposals for a new Welsh-medium primary school have also been put forward. The Welsh school will be situated on the site currently occupied by Corneli Primary School and Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sger in Cornelly. Like its English counterpart, the Welsh school will accommodate 420 primary pupils, 60 nursery children, and will feature age-appropriate classrooms and outdoor play areas.

The development plans for the Welsh-medium school involve the demolition of existing structures to make way for a modern educational facility that aligns with the latest standards in school design. The project aims to create a conducive learning environment that caters to the needs of Welsh-speaking students in the community.

Both sets of proposals are now awaiting review by Bridgend Council’s planning department, where they will undergo thorough assessment before a final decision is made. The submission of these plans marks a significant step towards enhancing educational provision in Cornelly and ensuring that students have access to modern and well-equipped learning environments.

The community’s response to these proposed developments will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of education in the area. Public consultations held in 2023 have already provided valuable insights, and the upcoming review process will further scrutinise the plans to ensure they meet the needs and expectations of all stakeholders involved.

As Cornelly prepares for the potential construction of these two new schools, local residents, parents, and educators are encouraged to stay informed and engaged in the planning process. The establishment of these educational facilities has the potential to positively impact the community by providing quality learning opportunities for children and contributing to the overall development of the area.
