Plans Announced for Flood Wall to Run Through Beautiful Welsh Town – Wales Online
Proposals have been revealed for a flood wall to be constructed in a Welsh town, as announced by Natural Resources Wales (NRW). The aim of the proposed ‘Cardigan Tidal Flood Scheme’ is to decrease the tidal flood risk to approximately 90 homes and businesses in Cardigan. The wall’s planned location is between the Gloster Row car park and the river, closely following the existing river wall until it reaches the bathroom centre. The alignment would then deviate slightly into the river channel before reconnecting with the existing river boundary under Cardigan Castle, concluding at Cardigan Bridge.
NRW is also considering the development of a new public area behind the flood wall near Cardigan Bridge and in front of Cardigan Castle to not only reduce flood risk but also enhance the community. Project manager Chris Pratt expressed the agency’s commitment to providing a high level of flood protection in anticipation of rising sea levels, as well as exploring opportunities for community benefits through the scheme.
Efforts are underway to retain the slipway adjacent to Gloster Row car park, potentially including flood gates at the top, while discussions with local stakeholders like the sea scouts and other businesses are ongoing to ensure river access is maintained. The proposed wall’s design has incorporated feedback from a community consultation in late 2022, considering factors such as historical significance, technical complexities, and environmental impact.
With the completion of the outline design, NRW is now moving into the detailed design phase to finalise construction specifics, materials, and the wall’s resilience against future climate changes. This phase will also investigate additional community and environmental enhancements to complement the core flood protection measures. The Welsh Government has continued to fund the project, demonstrating its support for the scheme.
The ‘Cardigan Tidal Flood Scheme’ signifies a significant step towards safeguarding homes and businesses in Cardigan from tidal flooding, while also showcasing a commitment to holistic community and environmental improvement. NRW’s comprehensive approach to flood protection not only addresses immediate risks but also aims to create a sustainable and resilient environment for the future. Residents and local businesses can anticipate a safer and more fortified town thanks to these proactive measures.
The proposed flood wall is set to not only mitigate flood risks but also integrate seamlessly into the town’s landscape, harmonising functional and aesthetic aspects for the benefit of the community as a whole. As NRW advances into the next phase of detailed design, stakeholders can look forward to a comprehensive flood protection solution that encapsulates both safety and inclusive community development. With continued government backing, the ‘Cardigan Tidal Flood Scheme’ is poised to set a standard for proactive and environmentally conscious flood management initiatives in Wales.
