Plans to rejuvenate the Ostreme Centre, a community hub in Mumbles, have been approved by Swansea Council. The Mumbles Community Council has been granted permission to transform and expand the existing centre, pending funding for the proposed changes. The council, which acquired a lease for the centre four years ago, intends to partially demolish and extend the building to enhance its facilities and overall functionality.
The redevelopment plans include a new timber-framed entrance facing Newton Road, a ground-floor reception, multiple community rooms, a main hall with a demountable stage, a kitchen and serving area, restrooms, and bike storage space. The first floor is slated to house additional community rooms, office space for the community council, and a toilet. These upgrades aim to make the Ostreme Centre a more inclusive and versatile space for the local community.
Incorporating feedback from the public, the community council has collaborated with the Gower-based social enterprise Down to Earth Project to refine the project proposal. Martin O’Neill, the chairman of the community council, expressed optimism about the plans but highlighted the need to secure funding for the transformation. O’Neill emphasised the council’s vision to establish the Ostreme Centre as a vibrant community hub, noting the lack of substantial renovations in recent years.
The Ostreme Centre, originally a school building in the 1920s, was repurposed as a community centre in the 1970s. Recognising the high demand for its current facilities, the council envisions the revamped centre serving as a focal point for community activities. The proposed enhancements feature modern kitchen facilities, dedicated parking spaces, a new terrace with greenery, and roof solar panels to promote sustainability.
Following the approval of the detailed planning application and conservation area consent, the community council is now focusing on refining the project scope to ensure its financial viability. While the exact cost of the redevelopment remains undetermined, the council is committed to keeping residents informed as the initiative progresses. The Ostreme Centre stands as a testament to the council’s dedication to improving local amenities and fostering community engagement.
This redevelopment project aligns with the council’s track record of successful community initiatives, such as the development of the Underhill Park sports facilities and the skate park at West Cross. By revitalising the Ostreme Centre, the council aims to create a modern, welcoming space that meets the evolving needs of Mumbles residents. The collaborative efforts between the community council, local organisations, and residents exemplify a shared commitment to enhancing the community’s infrastructure and social connections.
As the transformation of the Ostreme Centre draws closer to fruition, it represents a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to revitalise community spaces in Mumbles. With a focus on inclusivity, sustainability, and community engagement, the project heralds a new chapter for the Ostreme Centre as a central hub for residents of all ages and interests.
