Visitors to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant are facing fresh disruptions due to ongoing construction and development work. Since January, reports have emerged of “parking chaos” at the hospital, caused by a temporary reduction in parking spaces to accommodate the installation of temporary units aimed at expanding surgical and endoscopy facilities. The Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB) has stated that disabled parking spaces have been given priority during this period. However, patients and visitors have expressed frustration, describing the situation as “stressful” and “chaotic”.
Simultaneously, construction work is progressing on the new Coed-Ely solar farm, which is intended to supply direct power to the hospital. This development necessitates weekend work scheduled for March 15 and 16, as well as March 22 and 23, between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm. During these weekends, traffic lights will be in operation from the roundabout leading to the hospital’s main entrance, adding to the challenges faced by visitors. The CTMUHB has assured that efforts are being made to minimise disruptions as much as possible.
The construction activities are also affecting the ‘back road’ of the hospital, specifically the route leading to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department. Despite the ongoing work, access for emergency vehicles to the A&E department remains unaffected. However, individuals are advised against parking in this area to facilitate the construction process. With parking spaces limited, visitors are being urged to allocate extra time for parking and to park responsibly to ensure clear access for emergency vehicles at all times.
In a recent update from the health board regarding parking at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, it was stated that steps are being taken to manage the parking challenges. The temporary reduction in parking spaces is a result of the installation of additional units to enhance surgical and endoscopy services. Priority has been given to retaining and relocating disabled parking spaces closer to the hospital building to accommodate the construction work.
Visitors and staff members are encouraged to explore alternative eco-friendly travel options such as carpooling and public transportation during peak times to alleviate parking pressures. Additionally, off-site parking options are being provided for staff members, a short walking distance away from the hospital. The health board acknowledges the efforts of its staff in managing the situation and highlights the importance of cooperation from all parties to ensure the safety and well-being of patients, staff, and visitors during this period.
As the construction and development work progresses at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, it is essential for all individuals accessing the site to remain patient and considerate of the ongoing challenges. Clear communication from the health board regarding parking arrangements and alternative travel options is crucial to minimise disruptions and ensure a smooth experience for all visitors and staff. By working together and adhering to parking guidelines, everyone can contribute to maintaining a safe and efficient environment at the hospital despite the temporary disruptions caused by the construction work.
