Indian Restaurant in Cardiff Faces Health Risk due to Mouse Infestation
An Indian restaurant in Cardiff, Lake Spice, gained popularity with rave reviews praising its delicious food and warm staff. With an average rating of 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor and Google, it seemed like a culinary hotspot. However, the restaurant harboured a dark secret that shocked both customers and authorities. Despite the positive reviews, Lake Spice was found to be infested with mice, leaving droppings all over the premises, including on tablecloths and the kitchen floor.
Environmental health inspectors from Cardiff council discovered the dire conditions during an inspection on September 21, 2023. They found that the storage facilities at Lake Spice on Lake Road West, Cyncoed, were overrun with mice and that the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the restaurant were severely lacking. The council spokesman highlighted that the restaurant’s layout and design did not meet hygiene standards, posing a serious risk to customer health.
The restaurant’s owner, Mamun Miah, was taken to Cardiff Magistrates’ Court and ordered to pay £16,254 after pleading guilty to three food hygiene offences. The court heard that despite efforts to control the pest infestation, they were insufficient, leading to a significant presence of mice on the premises. District Judge Mark Layton admonished Miah for prioritising profit over customer safety and warned of potential jail time for future violations.
Miah and his business, Lakeside Restaurant Ltd, were slapped with fines totalling £13,877, in addition to a victim services surcharge. Although the defence lawyer mentioned that there was no evidence of contamination in the food preparation areas, the judge emphasised the seriousness of the health risk posed by the mouse infestation. Councillor Norma Mackie, responsible for Shared Regulatory Services, condemned the limited efforts made by the restaurant to address the pest problem properly.
