Pedestrians ran for safety as driver reversed wrong way down one-way street

Pedestrians in Carmarthen’s Lammas Street had to run to safety as a driver reversed at speed the wrong way down a one-way street. The driver, identified as Anthony Wray, abandoned the car and fled the scene, but a public-spirited taxi driver witnessed the incident and followed him to a nearby car park. Swansea Crown Court heard that Wray had a history of motoring offenses, including driving with excess alcohol, driving while disqualified, and failing to stop after an accident. Wray’s barrister mentioned that the defendant was remorseful for his “impulsive” actions on that day.

According to the prosecutor, on the evening of August 10, police were alerted to a car being driven dangerously in Carmarthen town center. The car had collided with parked vehicles, but when officers arrived, the car was nowhere to be found. Fortunately, a taxi driver who witnessed the incident informed the police and led them to the car park where the car had been abandoned. CCTV footage showed the chaotic events that unfolded, with Wray’s partner attempting to intervene before he recklessly reversed the car down the one-way street, endangering pedestrians.

Despite initially refusing to talk to the police, Wray’s partner later revealed her concerns about his alcohol consumption and her efforts to prevent him from driving by deflating the car’s tires. Wray was subsequently arrested and faced charges of common assault and dangerous driving. In court, Wray pleaded guilty to the charges and expressed remorse for his actions. However, Recorder Simon Hughes condemned Wray’s “disgraceful” driving behavior, highlighting the damage caused and the endangerment to others.

Given Wray’s extensive criminal record, which included numerous driving offenses, the court sentenced him to 12 months in prison for dangerous driving and common assault. Wray was also disqualified from driving for three and a half years and required to pass an extended test before regaining his license. Recorder Hughes emphasized the need for consequences for Wray’s actions and urged him to consider the impact of his behavior. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the potential consequences of reckless actions on the road.
