A man described as “pathetically childish” by a court controlled his partner’s life and physically assaulted her in a disturbing case brought before Swansea Crown Court. Thomas Edwards was accused of engaging in controlling and coercive behavior towards his partner, which culminated in him hitting her with a horse whip. The court heard that their relationship was toxic from the beginning, with Edwards displaying undue jealousy towards other males and imposing strict control over his partner’s interactions.
According to reports, Edwards prevented his partner from interacting with male colleagues, threatened violence towards any men she worked with, and compelled her to send videos from her workplace to prove who she was associating with. This controlling behavior led to the woman losing her job and being isolated from her friends and family. Edwards monitored her phone calls, insisted on her social media login details, and even restricted her from interacting with his male friends at their flat.
The situation escalated on one occasion when the woman informed Edwards about working with the boss’ son-in-law, triggering aggressive and violent behavior from him. The woman managed to call emergency services while Edwards struck her with a horsewhip. When police arrived, Edwards attempted to evade arrest but was apprehended shortly after. In his defence, Edwards denied the assault allegations and claimed he was the one being controlled in the relationship.
Despite his denial, Edwards had a history of previous convictions, including assaults and breaching a restraining order. He pleaded guilty to the charges of engaging in controlling and coercive behavior and assault causing actual bodily harm. During sentencing, the judge criticised Edwards for his immature jealousy and sentenced him to 16 months in prison. However, due to time already served, Edwards was expected to be released in a matter of weeks.
