Cardiff Man Found Guilty of Repeatedly Sexually Assaulting Young Girl
Thomas Vanstone, a 26-year-old man from Cardiff, has been convicted of “ruining the life” of a young girl by repeatedly sexually abusing her, causing her to self-harm and have suicidal thoughts. The victim, who was just eight years old when the abuse began, expressed in a victim personal statement read at the Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court that she had carried the trauma and shame of the abuse for years, too scared to speak up. Vanstone denied the offences but was found guilty of three counts of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration and two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
During the sentencing hearing, the prosecutor shared the victim’s statement, where she detailed the significant psychological impact the abuse had on her, leading to depression, anxiety, night terrors, and self-harm. She expressed feelings of isolation and struggles with self-confidence, highlighting the lasting effects of the trauma inflicted by Vanstone. Despite the victim’s bravery in coming forward, Vanstone showed no remorse, leading Judge Paul Hopkins to condemn his appalling behaviour and the profound impact on the victim.
In his defence, Vanstone’s barrister mentioned his client’s young age and previous good character, emphasizing his denial of the charges. However, the judge sentenced him to six years in prison, with a requirement to serve two-thirds of the term before being eligible for release on licence. Additionally, Vanstone was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, sex offender notification requirements, and an indefinite restraining order. Following the hearing, detective constable Rhiannon Phillips from South Wales Police commended the victim’s courage and encouraged all victims of sexual violence to come forward.
