Overcrowding at train station dubbed worst in UK putting passengers ‘in danger’

Passengers at London’s Euston railway station are facing concerning levels of overcrowding, with a transport watchdog warning that the situation is putting passengers in danger. London TravelWatch expressed alarm at the station’s overcrowding, highlighting how last-minute announcements lead to passengers rushing to platforms, overwhelming staff. Network Rail, the station owner, received criticism for converting the main departure board into a large advertisement screen, which has been deemed inadequate for providing crucial train information.

Last year, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) issued an improvement notice to Network Rail due to safety risks from overcrowding. While Network Rail made efforts to manage passenger flows and overcrowding following the notice, concerns persist. The passenger experience at Euston is noted to be subpar, especially during disruptions, where overcrowding intensifies, leading to hazardous conditions for passengers.

Despite attempts to enhance safety, including installing signs to deter running and ensuring clear platforms, passenger comfort remains a challenge during busy periods. Network Rail acknowledges the need for major investments and modernization at Euston but reassures that safety remains their top priority. Plans to redevelop the station have been proposed, subject to securing additional government funding.

The Labour ministers are yet to confirm the extension of the high-speed railway HS2 to Euston, delaying potential improvements. Questions have also arisen regarding the conduct of Lord Hendy, the rail minister, concerning his past involvement with Network Rail. Instances such as the dismissal of a railway engineer for voicing safety concerns at Euston have sparked controversy.

While improvements have been made in response to safety concerns, both Network Rail and regulatory bodies recognize the ongoing challenges. Efforts to manage crowd control, especially during disruptions, are being discussed to enhance passenger experience and safety. The situation at Euston underscores the need for sustained efforts to address overcrowding issues and ensure a safe and comfortable travel environment for all passengers.
