Outdoor education centre to close and be replaced by housing

An outdoor education centre in Carmarthenshire is set to close next year and will be replaced by affordable housing, as reported by Wales Online. Pendine Outdoor Education Centre, operated by Carmarthenshire Council, has provided adventure experiences for many young people over the years but is now deemed to be in need of significant upgrades. With a growing demand for housing, council leaders have decided to explore new options for the site. The council plans to construct alternative outdoor accommodation at Pembrey Country Park along the coast.

Councillor Hazel Evans, responsible for regeneration, leisure, culture and tourism, highlighted the rising need for affordable housing in Carmarthenshire and across the country. The closure of the outdoor education centre in October 2025 due to facility deterioration presents an opportunity to develop 25 affordable housing units at the location. The council remains dedicated to providing outdoor education experiences for youth, with funds from the closure of Pendine centre to be reinvested in Pembrey Country Park for enhanced facilities like camping and glamping pods.

Pendine Outdoor Education Centre, situated near Pendine’s famous beach known for land speed records, has hosted various groups including Scouts, Guides, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants, and school groups. The news of its upcoming closure in the autumn has surprised some residents in the village. There is optimism regarding the affordable housing proposal, although concerns about the definition of “affordable” housing have been raised. Carmarthenshire Council has recently invested £7.6m in developing new amenities at Pendine, including a beach-side hostel, restaurant, museum, and playground.

In a time where housing demand is high and outdoor education remains vital, the transition from the education centre to affordable housing represents a significant change for the community. The upcoming developments aim to ensure continued opportunities for outdoor experiences while addressing the pressing need for housing in Carmarthenshire.
