One of Wales’ oldest PR and marketing firms, Petersens, has announced that it is ceasing trading. The Cardiff-based company, founded by Rob Petersen, made the decision after several clients opted to bring their PR and marketing functions in-house. Despite this, Rob Petersen will continue to serve clients as a sole trader under the Petersens PR brand, with freelance support.
The firm, which employed four people, has appointed Helen Whitehouse of Swansea-based insolvency practice McAlister and Co as voluntary liquidator. Rob Petersen established Petersens Ltd, formerly trading as Petersens PR, over twenty years ago. He reflected on the challenges leading to the closure, citing budget issues among clients due to the uncertainty surrounding the General Election and changes in government that prompted them to cut PR and marketing expenses.
Petersen expressed disappointment at the turn of events, especially after celebrating the company’s 20th anniversary in 2023 with new business wins and a promising client list. Despite the setback, he remains optimistic about the future. Petersen acknowledged the common industry practice of businesses cutting PR and marketing budgets during challenging times, leading to the difficult decision to wind down the company.
He shared, “After 20 years of working with many excellent clients in Wales and beyond, and having employed dozens of PR practitioners, many of whom have gone on to have incredible careers in the industry, this was a bitter blow.” However, Petersen is committed to continuing to support businesses with their marketing and PR needs. He will offer his services on a freelance basis under the Petersens PR brand.
Rob Petersen’s decision to rebuild the business as a sole trader reflects his resilience and dedication to serving clients despite the challenges faced by the firm. Petersens’ legacy in the Welsh PR and marketing sector is a testament to Petersen’s leadership and the contributions of its employees over the years.
While the closure marks the end of an era for Petersens Ltd, Rob Petersen’s determination to carry on under the Petersens PR brand highlights the enduring spirit of entrepreneurship in Wales. As businesses navigate economic uncertainties, Petersen’s commitment to supporting clients through freelance services showcases his adaptability and continued passion for PR and marketing.
