One in five Brits have experienced the consequences of holidaying without insurance, according to a recent study reported by Wales Online. Research conducted with 2,000 holidaymakers revealed that over three in ten individuals have traveled abroad without insurance coverage. Shockingly, a fifth of these travellers found themselves in a bind when unexpected circumstances arose during their trips.
Among those who embarked on their holidays without insurance, a quarter admitted to simply forgetting to purchase coverage, while an alarming 66 per cent intentionally chose to travel uninsured. The repercussions of this decision were significant, with those who needed insurance facing an average out-of-pocket expense of £1,570 each. These costs often included additional hotel nights, hospital stays, or medical bills that were not anticipated.
Furthermore, the study highlighted that unforeseen events such as jury services, pregnancies, or redundancies disrupted the travel plans of a fifth of holidaymakers, who then had to bear the full cost of a trip they were unable to take. Al Murray, a spokesperson from loveholidays, the online travel agent that commissioned the survey, emphasized the risks associated with booking a holiday without insurance. Murray warned that factors beyond one’s control could lead to unexpected costs, either preventing the holiday or impacting the traveller during their trip.
Despite the importance of travel insurance, the study revealed that 20 per cent of respondents only booked their holiday cover shortly before their trip, with 28 per cent unaware that insurance begins from the moment of purchase. Murray stressed the necessity of having adequate insurance in place from the booking stage to safeguard against potential expenses like medical bills, extended hotel stays, or even the cost of a cancelled trip.
In addition, the research indicated that 52 per cent of people feel most adventurous while on holiday, making them more likely to purchase travel insurance for adventurous trips. Murray encouraged holidaymakers to enjoy themselves responsibly and ensure they have the necessary protection in place in case of unforeseen events. The survey also found that nine out of ten travellers who had experienced being caught without cover vowed to always book insurance for future trips.
The findings serve as a cautionary tale for Brits planning their holidays, underscoring the importance of securing travel insurance from the moment a trip is booked. By being proactive and prepared, travellers can mitigate unexpected costs and enjoy their holidays with peace of mind, knowing they are financially protected.
