Olympian Becomes Decorator After Retirement
Dan Jervis, a former Olympian who captured the hearts of many around the world, has recently embarked on a new chapter in his life as a painter and decorator. The young athlete, who retired at the age of 28, had a career filled with accolades and achievements, representing Team GB at two Olympics, earning two Commonwealth medals, and claiming 11 national championship titles.
Jervis, born in Resolven, Neath, started his swimming journey at a very young age, accompanying his grandfather to the pool as part of his rehabilitation from a heart attack. His natural affinity for swimming shone through, and by the age of seven, he was already competing competitively. Supported by his family, particularly his father who made significant sacrifices for his training, Jervis transitioned from a hobbyist swimmer to a dedicated athlete training seven times a week.
Despite his initial doubts, Jervis’s determination and hard work paid off when he secured bronze in the 1500m freestyle at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This achievement marked a turning point in his career, propelling him into the spotlight and earning him recognition as a Welsh athlete.
Throughout his career, Jervis faced challenges and setbacks, including narrowly missing out on qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics. However, his resilience and drive led him to eventually fulfill his dream of representing Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Games, where he finished fifth in the 1500m freestyle event, a moment he considers one of the proudest in his career.
In 2022, Jervis made headlines by becoming the first elite British swimmer to come out as gay, a decision he describes as a personal and empowering one. Despite facing initial fears, the support and acceptance he received encouraged him to continue being a role model for others in the LGBTQ+ community.
Following his retirement in 2024 after competing in the Paris Olympics, Jervis decided to pursue a new path as a painter and decorator, working alongside his father. While reflecting on his swimming career, he expressed a desire to venture into media and television presenting, aspiring to work on shows like The One Show or This Morning.
