An old Blockbuster store in Penarth is being transformed into a new bar and restaurant, set to open soon. The store on Windsor Road closed in 2013 along with the chain’s other UK locations. After nearly two years of planning, the new brasserie-style restaurant, named Hickmans Bar and Restaurant, is nearing its opening.
The restaurant operator, Sean Murphy, revealed that they will have soft launches in mid-September before opening to the public the following week. The building has undergone extensive renovations, with new flooring and a state-of-the-art kitchen. Murphy expressed excitement about the project and looks forward to welcoming customers to enjoy affordable home-cooked meals in a friendly environment.
The bar and restaurant will occupy the ground floor, with plans for an upper floor featuring another bar, an outdoor roof terrace, and a private dining area. Local councillors have shown support for the development, with Vale of Glamorgan Council ward member, Cllr Neil Thomas, praising the initiative to rejuvenate the vacant space. He highlighted the positive impact of bringing the building back into use and adding to the area’s hospitality offerings.
The community anticipates the opening of Hickmans Bar and Restaurant eagerly, as it breathes new life into the former Blockbuster site that had remained dormant for years. With the promise of a welcoming ambiance and quality dining options, the establishment is poised to become a valuable addition to the Penarth town centre.
