Northern lights alert issued Thursday, September 12 – best time to see them

The Met Office has issued an alert for a potential sighting of the Northern Lights on the night of Thursday, September 12. According to weather experts based in Exeter, there is a high possibility for parts of the UK to witness the stunning aurora display. The alert mentioned that clear skies overnight will create optimal viewing conditions, with sightings expected in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England. Although northern Scotland stands the best chance of viewing the spectacle, other areas across the UK may also have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. The prime viewing time is expected to be from the evening hours, peaking in the early hours of Friday morning.

The current cold, clear weather conditions are ideal for spotting the Northern Lights. A recent burst of cold weather originating from Iceland has spread across the country, enhancing the chances of witnessing the aurora. Typically, the best time to observe the Northern Lights is between 11 pm and 2 am. These mesmerizing displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere near the magnetic poles. In the northern hemisphere, this activity primarily takes place within a band known as the aurora oval, covering latitudes between 60 and 75 degrees.

The Northern Lights have been visible throughout the UK in 2024, with larger displays often occurring around the equinoxes in March-April and September-October, due to increased magnetic storms during these periods. Andy Smith, a researcher at Northumbria University, noted that the brightest aurora are typically seen around 11 pm to midnight local time. The Northern Lights, a natural phenomenon that captivates viewers worldwide, offer a breathtaking spectacle of lights dancing across the sky.

As the alert spreads, anticipation rises for the chance to witness this awe-inspiring natural light show. Enthusiasts and stargazers are encouraged to look up to the night sky tonight, with hopes of catching a glimpse of the magical Northern Lights display. The beauty of nature’s wonders is on full display, offering a rare opportunity to experience the enchanting dance of colours in the dark skies above.
