NHS warns ‘never use’ common item or risk permanent hearing loss

The NHS has issued a stark warning, advising people to never use a common item that could lead to permanent hearing loss. While many are aware that using cotton buds for ear cleaning is harmful, the NHS is now urging individuals to refrain from this practice to avoid irreversible damage to their hearing. The NHS website explicitly states, “Never put your fingers or any objects like cotton buds in your ears, even if you think they might be blocked.” This cautionary advice comes as a reminder that attempting to clean one’s ears using such tools can result in detrimental consequences.

Health experts at Ear View emphasise the risks associated with using cotton buds, highlighting that despite their appearance of being gentle, they can actually cause harm. Inserting cotton buds into the ear canal poses a threat of damaging the eardrums, potentially leading to severe issues like a perforated eardrum, tinnitus, or hearing loss. Instead of aiding in wax removal, these buds often push the earwax further into the canal, escalating the likelihood of complications such as hearing impairment, infections, dizziness, earaches, or vertigo.

In light of these risks, Ear View recommends alternative methods for ear care. One suggested approach is to gently wash the ears with warm water while showering, as the warmth helps soften the wax, making it easier to rinse away excess build-up. Additionally, using an ear dropper to apply a few drops of oil can facilitate the removal of earwax. This process allows the oil to be absorbed, aiding in the natural removal of earwax without the need for invasive tools like cotton buds.

The guidance provided by healthcare professionals serves as a crucial reminder to prioritise the safety and health of one’s ears. By adopting safer practices for ear hygiene, individuals can avoid the potential risks associated with using improper tools that may lead to long-term hearing impairments. Preserving one’s hearing health is paramount, and simple adjustments in ear care routines can significantly contribute to maintaining optimal ear function and overall well-being.
