New Welsh MP denies there was any deal with Keir Starmer for his seat

Labour’s new MP for Cardiff West, Alex Barros-Curtis, has denied any backroom deal with Keir Starmer for his parliamentary seat. Two months after being named as the MP for Cardiff West, Barros-Curtis faced initial backlash for allegedly being parachuted into the constituency without strong local connections. The seat has historically been a Labour stronghold, with predecessors like George Thomas and Rhodri Morgan.

Initially, there was criticism on social media regarding Barros-Curtis’ selection, questioning his knowledge of the constituency and his Welsh roots. However, Barros-Curtis, who grew up in Wales, expressed his excitement about moving to Cardiff and reconnecting with his Welsh heritage. Contrary to rumours, he explained that there was no preconceived plan for him to contest the seat, and Kevin Brennan’s unexpected decision not to run again paved the way for his candidacy.

Barros-Curtis, who previously worked in parliamentary roles and as the Labour Party’s executive director of legal affairs, highlighted that his path to becoming an MP was not orchestrated by any political deals. Emphasising his commitment to being a diligent constituency MP, he aims to focus on community investment, specifically in areas like Ely.

As he settles into his new role, Barros-Curtis acknowledges the challenges of balancing life between Cardiff and Westminster while addressing constituents’ needs. Despite the initial criticisms and speculation, he remains dedicated to serving the people of Cardiff West and building positive relationships within the community.

Looking ahead, Barros-Curtis aims to contribute to the betterment of the constituency and represent his constituents effectively. By prioritising local issues and engaging with the community, he seeks to establish himself as a hardworking and responsive Member of Parliament.
