New Suicide Prevention Service Launched in Wales

On World Suicide Prevention Day, the Welsh Government introduced a new national advisory service to assist those impacted by suicide. Mental Health Minister Sarah Murphy has emphasized the need for compassionate support for individuals affected by suicide and bereavement. This initiative follows a rise in suicide deaths in Wales in 2023, as per the latest ONS data.

National Advisory and Liaison Service Features:

  • Provides support to all those exposed, affected, or bereaved by suicide
  • Offers immediate and compassionate assistance
  • Includes regular contact with a dedicated liaison officer
  • Supports access to broader services

The free and confidential service can be accessed via phone, in person, or through video calls. It provides not only a safe space to talk but also practical support like organizing funerals or inquests. The service is not limited to immediate family members but also extends to friends, colleagues, neighbors, and witnesses affected by suicide.

The Jac Lewis Foundation, a Welsh charity that has supported over 900 individuals affected by suicide since 2021, will deliver the national service. Additionally, new guidance has been issued for agencies involved in the aftermath of a possible suicide, ensuring a compassionate and supportive response throughout the bereavement process.

Minister’s and CEO’s Statements:

“Bereavement after suicide can be devastating and it is vital everyone affected can access compassionate support in their time of need,”

said Mental Health and Early Years Minister Sarah Murphy. Liz Thomas-Evans, CEO of the Jac Lewis Foundation, expressed gratitude for delivering critical support to individuals and families affected by suicide.

The service aims to build a more compassionate and supportive Wales by providing essential support, guidance, and resources to those in need. For confidential assistance, individuals can contact the Samaritans at 116 123. More details on the new National Advisory and Liaison Service can be found on their website.
