A new study has found that a 5p pill has the ability to lower cholesterol levels, even in individuals with a family history of the condition. Omega 3 supplements have been proven to be beneficial for various health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes, with an estimated two out of 25 people taking these pills daily.
The research conducted by the University of Georgia and published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition involved data from over 441,000 participants. The study focused on individuals with a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol and calculated a genetic score to predict cholesterol levels. The results showed that those who reported taking fish oil supplements had lower blood lipid levels than expected, particularly in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (often known as “bad” cholesterol), and triglycerides.
Kaixiong Ye, the corresponding author of the study, highlighted, “Our study shows that considering lifestyles will improve genetic prediction. Our findings also support that fish oil supplements may counteract the genetic predisposition to high cholesterol.” High cholesterol is a significant risk factor for heart-related issues, as it can lead to hardened arteries and increase the likelihood of heart attacks or strokes.
The study indicated that for individuals with a family history of high cholesterol, taking fish oil supplements led to a shift towards a healthier lipid profile. Furthermore, the research showed that these supplements are effective in raising HDL cholesterol, known as “good” cholesterol. Omega 3 supplements, available for approximately 5p a day, were endorsed by health and diet expert Dr Michael Mosley.
Dr. Amina Hersi, a General Practitioner, emphasised the importance of omega 3 for maintaining a balanced diet, especially for individuals who may not consume sufficient amounts from sources like fish. She noted, “Some of us don’t get enough omega 3 from fish oil in salmon, mackerel, or other oily fish, which helps prevent inflammation and regulate menstrual cycles by supporting hormone production.”
The study sheds light on the positive impact of omega 3 supplements on individuals with a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol. The findings highlight the potential of affordable and easily accessible supplements in improving overall health outcomes.
