New Regulations for All Pornography Websites in the UK Starting in July
In the upcoming months, all websites hosting pornographic and harmful content are required to implement stringent age verification procedures to prevent minors from accessing such material. Ofcom, the regulatory body, has announced that as part of the enforcement of the Online Safety Act, platforms hosting adult content must have age verification measures in place by July 2025. Under the Online Safety Act, all social media and search services are mandated to conduct a children’s access assessment to determine the likelihood of minors accessing their platforms. By April 16, platforms are required to complete this assessment, after which Ofcom will issue codes of practice for sites deemed accessible to children. These guidelines will outline the measures platforms must implement to ensure the safety of younger users. Subsequently, by July, websites hosting adult content must conduct a children’s risk assessment and implement any necessary measures, including age verification checks. Regardless of the website’s nature, if it permits access to pornography, age verification checks are compulsory.

Websites hosting their own pornographic content must immediately introduce age verification measures, while user-to-user services, such as social media, that allow adult content must follow suit by July at the latest.
