New plans for a Cynon Valley bypass are set to be drawn up

Revised plans for a Cynon Valley bypass are set to be drawn up following the scheme being previously put on hold. Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council leader Councillor Andrew Morgan announced positive discussions with the Welsh Government had taken place. The council aims to review the plans for the Cynon Gateway North (A4059 to the A465) to move the scheme forward. The revised scheme’s goal is to boost the economy and connectivity in the upper Cynon Valley while reducing carbon emissions and environmental impacts.

In March 2022, the councils planning committee supported the Cynon Gateway North project, subject to potential consideration by Welsh Government. Concerns raised included traffic volume in villages like Llwydcoed and Penywaun, pollution, large vehicles, and road safety. Environmental issues such as noise, pollution, impact on wildlife, loss of farming land, and ancient woodland were also cited. The scheme was halted in February 2023 due to the Welsh Government’s roads review.

However, Councillor Morgan has now confirmed a review and redesign of the Aberdare scheme. The redesign will focus on minimising environmental impact and reducing carbon emissions. The council emphasises the link between A4059 and A465 is essential for the upper Cynon Valley’s economy and connectivity. Cllr Morgan highlighted the importance of the scheme in ensuring the community of Llwydcoed is not adversely affected by through traffic.

Cynon Valley MS Vikki Howells expressed support for the project, aiming to alleviate congestion, pollution, and road hazards in Llwydcoed while enhancing economic potential in the area. As plans progress, continued community engagement is expected to ensure the proposals align with local needs and preferences. The effort to develop a scheme that benefits the wider community while prioritising sustainability and environmental impact reduction has been positively received by stakeholders.

The news of progressing plans for the Cynon Valley bypass has garnered support from local officials and residents, indicating a step forward in addressing long-standing transportation challenges in the region. With a focus on economic development, connectivity improvements, and environmental sustainability, the revised scheme aims to strike a balance between community needs and environmental conservation.
