A young mother from Berkshire had to undergo the traumatic experience of having her arm amputated after breaking it while fitting a car seat, just weeks after giving birth. Jessica Lane, 31, was five months pregnant with her son, Theo, now two years old, when she started experiencing pain in her upper left arm and shoulder in March 2022. The pain persisted even after Theo was born, and five weeks postpartum, while trying to install a car seat, Jessica heard a “crunch” in her upper arm, leaving her in excruciating pain.
After finally having an X-ray, it was discovered that her humerus had broken due to a 13cm tumour growing on it. Jessica was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of primary bone cancer, in September 2022. Despite undergoing surgery to remove the tumour, further tumours were discovered, leading doctors to recommend amputating her arm in May 2023 to save her life.
Jessica, now a mother-of-one, aims to raise awareness about bone cancer and provide hope to others facing similar challenges.
