Netflix’s Commitment to Wales Reaches Hundreds of Millions in Investments
In a significant boost to the Welsh economy, Netflix has upped its game in productions filmed in Wales, with projects contributing over £200 million since 2020. Among these productions is “Havoc”, a new film starring Tom Hardy, set to premiere on April 25. Directed by Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans, “Havoc” is touted to be the largest feature film ever shot entirely in Wales.
Welsh locations have been gaining prominence as key settings for Netflix series like The Witcher, Sex Education, and The Crown. The lush landscapes of the Wye Valley, Cwmcarn Forest, and the Wye River have all been utilised in various Netflix shows, enhancing the visual appeal and authenticity of the storytelling.
The Witcher, featuring Henry Cavill, is another marquee series that has found a home in Wales for its filming. From Penarth’s Paget Room to Cwmcarn in the South Wales valleys, these locations have added depth and character to the scenes depicted in the popular fantasy series.
One notable highlight from the third season of The Crown is the use of Caernarfon Castle to film the investiture ceremony of the Prince of Wales, a nod to the real-life event that took place there in 1969 to crown Prince Charles. The meticulous attention to detail in replicating historical events in authentic locations adds gravitas to Netflix productions.
Netflix has not only enriched the Welsh film industry but has also made a positive impact on the community through initiatives like the ‘IGNITE Your Creativity’ programme in collaboration with the National Youth Theatre. By conducting workshops across several Welsh regions, Netflix has empowered over 350 young talents, nurturing their skills and setting the stage for a future in the creative industries.
The economic benefits of Netflix’s presence extend beyond the entertainment sector, with various industries reaping rewards from the collaborations. For every pound spent by Netflix on Welsh productions, almost 60 pence flows into the TV and film sectors, bolstering job opportunities and infrastructure development.
The Welsh Government, in partnership with Creative Wales, has played a pivotal role in supporting these ventures, positioning Wales as a sought-after filming destination. This strategic collaboration not only drives the local economy forward but also elevates Welsh talent and landscapes onto the global stage, garnering attention and admiration worldwide.
As Netflix continues to invest in Welsh productions and nurture local talent, the future looks promising for the entertainment industry in Wales. By leveraging the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region, Netflix is not just telling stories but also creating a lasting impact on the economy and the creative landscape of Wales for years to come.
