Private Eye editor Ian Hislop has expressed his gratitude to everyone for their concern after an incident where the rear window of a taxi he was in was shattered. Initially, there were fears that the London black taxi had been hit by a bullet, but the Metropolitan Police have stated that there is “no evidence of a firearms discharge at this time”.
The incident occurred in Soho on Tuesday morning, and the police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding it. Hislop, known for his role as a team captain on the BBC comedy current affairs quiz show, “Have I Got News For You,” since 1990, has confirmed the incident and appreciated the concern shown by all. The police are looking into alternative explanations for the shattered window and are conducting urgent CCTV and forensic examinations.
The incident was reported by the taxi driver, who mentioned that he was stationary in traffic in Dean Street when the window was struck by what seemed like a shot. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in the incident. The police have seized the vehicle for further investigation, and while inquiries are ongoing, they have not found any evidence of a firearms discharge yet. Initial indications suggest a possible mechanical fault may have caused the window to shatter, and additional tests are awaited.
Hislop, who has also been the editor of Private Eye magazine since 1986, expressed his thanks to the officers and everyone who reached out to him. The Metropolitan Police have informed both the driver and passenger involved in the incident. The investigation is ongoing, with police working to determine the cause of the shattered window in the taxi Hislop was travelling in.
